Interactive Itinerary Map

Use this interactive map to navigate the spots mentioned in this guide. We have color-coded each day for your convenience.

Day 1: The Historical Peninsula (Sultanahmet)

Your first day in Istanbul should be dedicated to the city's most iconic historical monuments, all conveniently located in the Sultanahmet district.

  • Morning: Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. Start your day early at the Hagia Sophia to beat the crowds. Marvel at its massive dome and Byzantine mosaics. Just across the square is the Blue Mosque, famous for its intricate Iznik tiles. Remember to dress modestly (women must cover their hair, and shoulders/knees should be covered for both genders).
  • Lunch Recommendations: Grab a quick and delicious lunch of Kofte (Turkish meatballs) at the historic Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi (operating since 1920). If you want an incredible view, head to Seven Hills Restaurant for a slightly pricier seafood lunch with unmatched panoramic views of both mosques.
  • Afternoon: Topkapi Palace and Basilica Cistern. Spend a few hours wandering the opulent courtyards of the Topkapi Palace, home to Ottoman Sultans for nearly 400 years. Don't skip the Harem section! Afterwards, head underground to the eerie and beautiful Basilica Cistern to see the Medusa heads.
  • Dinner: Walk towards the Sirkeci area and dine at Hafiz Mustafa 1864 for incredible Baklava and Turkish tea after your meal.

Pro Tip: Buy the Istanbul Museum Pass online in advance to skip the long ticket lines at Topkapi Palace and other state-run museums.

Day 2: Markets, Galata, and the Bosphorus

On your second day, cross the Golden Horn to explore the lively European side and take in the city from the water.

  • Morning: Grand Bazaar & Spice Bazaar. Get lost in the labyrinth of the Grand Bazaar, hunting for carpets, lamps, and souvenirs. Remember that bargaining is expected here! Then, walk down the hill to the Spice Bazaar in Eminönü for a sensory overload of Turkish delight (Lokum), saffron, and exotic spices.
  • Lunch: Grab a Balık Ekmek (fish sandwich) right off the boats docked near the Galata Bridge in Eminönü. It's cheap, fresh, and incredibly authentic. Wash it down with a glass of pickle juice (Turşu Suyu) if you are feeling adventurous!
  • Afternoon: Bosphorus Cruise. Head to the Eminönü ferry docks and hop on a public Bosphorus ferry (Turyol or Şehir Hatları). Cruising between Europe and Asia, passing majestic palaces like Dolmabahçe and Ortaköy Mosque, is an absolute must-do in Istanbul.
  • Evening: Galata Tower and Karaköy. Cross the Galata Bridge and climb the Galata Tower right before sunset for breathtaking 360-degree views of the city. Afterwards, have dinner in the trendy Karaköy neighborhood. We highly recommend Karaköy Lokantası for high-end traditional Ottoman cuisine (book in advance).

Day 3: The Asian Side and Modern Istanbul

Leave the tourist crowds behind and experience how local Istanbulites live.

  • Morning: Ferry to Kadıköy. Take a scenic ferry ride to Kadıköy on the Asian side. Walk through the bustling Kadıköy produce market, grab a Turkish coffee at Fazıl Bey'in Türk Kahvesi, and stroll along the beautiful Moda coastline park.
  • Lunch: Eat at Çiya Sofrası in Kadıköy, arguably the best restaurant in Istanbul for trying diverse regional Anatolian dishes that you won't find anywhere else.
  • Afternoon: Istiklal Street and Taksim. Take the ferry back to Karaköy, ride the historic Tünel funicular (the second oldest subterranean railway in the world) up to Istiklal Street. Walk down this bustling pedestrian avenue towards Taksim Square, stopping at the historic Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage) for photos.
  • Evening: Turkish Bath (Hamam). Reward yourself after 3 days of intense walking with a traditional Turkish Bath experience. Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in Karaköy or Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı in Sultanahmet offer the most luxurious, spotless, and authentic experiences to scrub away the city dust.
